When someone is considering building or buying a JTAG/RGH/R-JTAG or not, sometimes they have a lot of questions that can be answered very easily. Likewise, some choose to buy one of the aforementioned consoles without doing too much research beforehand and become a bit overwhelmed or confused. In order to cut down on spam-threads in the help sections, I figured I would take a preventative measure.
Here's some of the best guides which describe all there is to know about JTAG/RGH/R-JTAG consoles. They will answer all of the big and/or small questions you may have. (Yes they are all on Se7enSins, but I'm not trying to advertise them. I am including them simply because I know from first and second-hand experience that the best knowledge can be found on those threads)
If you do choose to buy or build a JTAG/RGH/R-JTAG, watch all of the videos in this playlist in order once you have the console in your possession with the proper hardware installed. The videos are easy-to-follow tutorials which will teach you how to set up all of the proper software and homebrew that will you ever need.(If you have a question about specifics in installing homebrew, setting up LiNK, setting up Stealth, or managing files/mods/games, you certainly won't after you watch these videos).
"If my JTAG gets banned, will my retail get banned?"
The answer is that it depends. Allow me to elaborate:
The best advice I can give you is to just not have both of your consoles connected to the Internet at the same time (except for those brief moments when you do JTAG to Retail Infections). Also, make sure that you don't use any items from your Retail on your JTAG or vice versa. Keep their contents separated. Now, in regards to "IP bans," not all games will flag IP addresses. What most, if not all games, do is send a sort of "challenge" over to a console that JTAG/RGH/R-JTAG consoles fail. When the console fails that challenge, it gets banned.
I've had friends who had gotten their JTAG's banned and their Retails also banned because they had both consoles connected to XBL on the same IP address at the same time. To keep your retail from being banned, just use the aforementioned precautions, cycle your IP, and cycle your MAC address to keep your retail from being banned.
"What do I need to take my JTAG/RGH/R-JTAG on Xbox Live?"
You'll need some type of paid Stealth service (such as XBLSE) or some offline files. If you take your console online without either of those, it will be instantly banned. Offline files usually lack XOSC spoofing, so your KV's will last much longer on a paid Stealth service. Obviously, once your console gets banned, you'll need to buy a new KV. This process is explained in one of the videos in the playlist I have linked above, so I won't elaborate.
"What's the difference between shared and unshared KV's and can I unban my retail?"
Unshared KV's are only being used by you and shared KV's are being used by more than one person. Obviously, the unshared KV's will get banned faster.
Retail consoles cannot be unbanned like an exploited console can.
"What kind of Hard Drive should I use with my Homebrew 360?"
I always recommend a 500GB Internal (just run a partition fixer on it so you have HDD1 and HDDX) and then using a big (1 or 2 TB) external USB HDD. The reason being is that XBLA, DLC, and avatar items need to be placed on a formatted internal HDD. Games, emulators, and homebrew can be placed on an external HDD (Make sure you format this external to FAT32).
